Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta

How much fun can you have on a 16 hour bus ride? I guess it depends on who you sit next to! And yes sorry to those who are sick of my ‘meeting cool chicks on busses’ stories but the following will be yet another one! I am definitely making up for all those bus and train rides in my younger day when I hoped beyond hope that I would sit beside a cute girl. It never ever happened. It was usually somebody’s mother or a kid who couldn’t afford a car.

After my night of Gin and Jack Daniels, my last night in Krabi, I jumped on a mini bus…the woman I had briefly spoken to while we waited for the bus to arrive jumped into the seat beside me. I might have been flattered if it hadn’t been the only seat left! My first impression of her was that she might have been a Thai. It turned out she was Swedish of East Indian decent.

Koh Lanta.

Patrick and I were climbing something called the Bungaloo and I was about three quarters of the way up. I was straddling a rock formation but just couldn’t hold it so I let go. Out I swung away from the rock. The anchor was bolted to an overhang which was 5 meters from the rock face where I let go. The belay station was on a ledge, ten meters up from the ground. I was suspended in mid air 5 meters out from the rock and 30 meters up. Actually I wasn’t suspended, I was swinging. The rope was going back and forth over the jagged lip just under the anchor like a big string over a big serrated knife with my full body weight acting as a big hand working to cut through the rope.

Koh Lanta

Thai people are by far the friendliest people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. They are warm hearted and will greet you with a smile just for the sake of it…that’s just the way they are. The affect this has on a person is remarkable…the entire time I was in Thailand I had a feeling of well being partly because I knew that the next Thai person I talked to would be smiling and sincerely happy and interested to meet me. Not sure how they figured out the secret to happiness but I plan on finding out. I do know that most have a per capita income that would put them far below the poverty line in Canada yet I see far more smiling faces here than back home. Happiness(at least inThailand), it seems, doesn’t require a whole heck of a lot of money…that’s a refreshing thought!

Koh Lanta

It was my first night as an independent traveller. I had made it to Penang, proud of myself for figuring out the logistics of getting there from KL…and getting there cheaply. I searched the streets of Penang for a hostel mentioned in the Lonely Planet and booked myself in. All in all a good day. Did some exploring during the day and then returned to my room to settle in for the night. It was midnight, I was still reading a great novel I had picked up at the airport Street Lawyer I believe it was or some other Grisham novel about lawyers anyhow I was heavily into it when I noticed a little orange coloured bug scurry across the page. I flicked it away and thought nothing of it.

Long Ride Home to Kuala Lumpur.

Room with a view.

I should point out here that I refer to Kuala Lumpur as home. That is not to scare anyone into thinking I’m staying but more reflects how comfortable Norm and Lory have made me feel here. I know the trip would not be the same without their kind hospitality and I will fondly remember my many days in KL…especially The Neil Diamond tape that always seems to get played in their little Proton(Malaysian car). Me listening and really enjoying Neil Diamond…who’d a thought? Anyways, I am humbled by their generosity and at odds as to how I could ‘return their investment’ in me. I guess for starters I could try to keep my room a little neater . J

Through climbing and Lillan, I ended up hanging with a group that got pretty tight. Enjoyed the spontaneity of how we got together and I felt completely at ease with these new friends that I hope I will keep in touch with. Our little group consisted of:Lillan and me, who’s history you know; Henric and Christian, two Norwegians who are travelling the world; Jo and Sylvia, two pharmacists of all things, Jo from New Zealand and Sylvia from Scotland. They had met H & C in Nepal and then ran into them again in Krabi!

Jungle Trip In Phanga-nga.

Back in Krabi…time to climb!!! You can’t actually climb in Krabi but you take a 45 minute “long tail” ride to Railay Beach and you are in the premier climbing spot of Thailand. All I needed was a climbing partner! Luckily I ran into Jordan and Denise, a cool Canadian couple I met on the Fishing Village excursion. Jordan introduced me to Patrick, an Australian commercial fisherman and I had my climbing partner, who eventually was to witness one of the scariest moments of my existence!!!

To make a long story short (was that an audible sigh of relief?) I thought that things could not get better than my time at Nice Beach…but they did!!!

I think I’ve found my sport!! I have definitely found my sport. The first day climbing actually was quite frustrating as Patrick, although a good climber was not that experienced and didn’t inspire confidence. I also didn’t trust the rope we were using and some yahoo told us that the bolts we were trusting our lives with could bust at any moment!! Needless to say I was distracted!

On The Road With Lillen
L, Phang Nga, Thailand.

Phanga ngaAfter Line and Chalotte headed off for Bali, I decided that it was time to move on…leave paradise to explore some other parts of Thailand. I met up with Lillan, a nurse from Norway and we decided to travel together. It was now two weeks into my trip and I hadn’t actually travelled with anyone so I was looking forward to it. Lillan and I proved to travel well together and we shared some great experiences: sleeping at a Muslim fishing village built entirely on stilts over the ocean(very cool!!) sleeping in a bamboo hut built on stilts over the jungle(cool!) trekking through leach infested jungle to an idyllic swimming hole(cool except for the leaches!) riding local transport at half the cost of tour booked transport. One leg of our journey the bus broke down and we hitched a ride with a local who happened to be a civil engineer who fed us pork buns and bananas .
