Koh Lanta

Thai people are by far the friendliest people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. They are warm hearted and will greet you with a smile just for the sake of it…that’s just the way they are. The affect this has on a person is remarkable…the entire time I was in Thailand I had a feeling of well being partly because I knew that the next Thai person I talked to would be smiling and sincerely happy and interested to meet me. Not sure how they figured out the secret to happiness but I plan on finding out. I do know that most have a per capita income that would put them far below the poverty line in Canada yet I see far more smiling faces here than back home. Happiness(at least inThailand), it seems, doesn’t require a whole heck of a lot of money…that’s a refreshing thought!

Koh Lanta Dusk Volleyball

Volleyball started that night, games were impromptu, starting at about 6 pm and lasting till the sun set. The staff as well as guests would play. It was in this way that I got to know the staff and some of the guests and I got over feeling totally conspicuous being the only lone traveller. The volleyball was great!!! One of the biggest things I missed from back home was beach volleyball and here I was on an awesome beach playing volleyball !! Through volleyball I met most of the staff: Yat, Pie, Lomak, Bon, Red, Noi, Maud, Dip who treated me very well during my stay, teaching me basic Thai and then forcing me practice by speaking only Thai to me! It was hilarious at times and frustrating at others.

Koh Lanta

Nice Beach Resort…okay resort is pushing it. In fact Nice Beach ‘Resort’ consists of 13 Bungalow style rooms, right on the beach with an outdoor dining area and places to hang out near the beach…it was barely a week old. It was built by the village’s leader in his attempt to cash in on Ko Lanta’s blossoming popularity.

Amazing Krabi, Thailand.

Wickedly Beautiful Beaches.

So I was out of my funk thanks to Becky and in the famous beach area of southern Thailand not exactly where the book “The Beach” was set, but close enough. It was in fact where some of the movie was filmed (the Kho San Road scene where incidentally my cousin Traviss and his fiancé Carly had a part!!! How cool is that?)

Traviss and Carly were actually the ones who recommended Krabi to me…I am forever in their debt for learning about such a place and the recommendations they gave me for in and around the area. It was their favorite place in Thailand and now mine! Actually it is my favorite place in the world! Not so much the town itself but the whole area and what it has to offer: the proximity to tropical beaches and remote islands with millions of things to see and do on the cheap! Figure in the excellent food and the friendly Thai people and it all added up to an amazing experience!!!

kl-51kl-52kl-53kl-55kl-60Koh Lanta, 68 km from Krabi town, has a group of 52 islands, the largest of which are Koh Lanta Yai, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Klarng. ‘Pulaotatak’ is the original name for Koh Lanta. In the language of the Chao Ley sea gypsies, it means simply ‘island with long beach’. The Chao Ley have a long history of living in Koh Lanta. Although many Chao Ley today seem to live no differently from the ethnic Thais on Lant, they proudly keep alive some traditions, such as the celebration of ‘Loy Rua Chao Le’ (The setting adrift of the Chao Ley boats). Visitors wanting to learn more about the Chao Ley sea kl-69gypsies and their traditions should take a look at the village of Sangaua on the southernmost tip of Koh Lanta Yai’s West coast. Koh Lanta Yai’s geography consists mainly of limestone mountain, with the Lanta Range running through the middle of the island. It is covered in lush rainforest, home to many species of fauna and flora. The magnificent beaches of the West coast draw increasingly more travellers in search of rest and recreation. The sub-district of Saladan on Koh Lanta Yai is the center of tourist facilities. Some of the most popular activities on Koh Lanta are swimming, sunbathing, cave exploration and scuba diving.
