Through climbing and Lillan, I ended up hanging with a group that got pretty tight. Enjoyed the spontaneity of how we got together and I felt completely at ease with these new friends that I hope I will keep in touch with. Our little group consisted of:Lillan and me, who’s history you know; Henric and Christian, two Norwegians who are travelling the world; Jo and Sylvia, two pharmacists of all things, Jo from New Zealand and Sylvia from Scotland. They had met H & C in Nepal and then ran into them again in Krabi!

The main bonding point was climbing but we did other stuff as well, such as eat, party etc… I was very sad to leave Krabi on account of the fun I was having in my last days there and in fact went two days over my visa!!!

All good things must end. What a stupid saying!! But I guess it’s true. We had one last day of rock climbing together in which I discovered bouldering an aspect of rock climbing that improves your skills and is a lot of fun in its own. Could have used a crash pad though!!!

So the six of us on after a day of rock climbing/bouldering/volleyball/lying on the beach spent the last evening we would all be together celebrating Jo’s birthday on the beach with a bottle of jack Daniel’s and a bottle of gin. We all got stupidly drunk and ended up at a beach bar where we danced the night away under the moon. Taking time out for a dip in the ocean.

Koh Lanta

One thing about the evening I will never forget is the boat ride from Railay beach to Oa Nang beach where we chose to party. It was dusk and a feeling of Jack Daniel’s induced well being washed over me as we rode the long tail past the silhouettes of sailboats, fishing boats and majestic limestone karsts rising from the sea. The night temperature perfectly suited for the t-shirt and shorts I was wearing.

It capped off a great week of climbing and was a fitting last night to a month in Thailand.

The crew ended up going to a cowboy bar that we had frequented earlier in the week but I had to give it a miss as I had to catch a bus early the next morning…precipitating another couple of adventures.

I met up with Lillan, a nurse from Norway and we decided to travel together. It was now two weeks into my trip and I hadn’t actually travelled with anyone so I was looking forward to it. Lillan and I proved to travel well together and we shared some great experiences: sleeping at a Muslim fishing village built entirely on stilts over the ocean(very cool!!) sleeping in a bamboo hut built on stilts over the jungle(cool!) trekking through leach infested jungle to an idyllic swimming hole(cool except for the leaches!) riding local transport at half the cost of tour booked transport. One leg of our journey the bus broke down and we hitched a ride with a local who happened to be a civil engineer who fed us pork buns and bananas .

Lillan was hilarious. She was so into bargaining and getting deals that whenever she got one that was too good to be true, her eyes would light up and she would grin from ear to ear!! Our excursion lasted three nights and we headed back to Krabi…me to rock climb, Lillan to move on to Ko Phi Phi. Lillen ended up changing her plans and as part of a larger group of people, we hung out until I left for KL the following week. Lillan tried and became fanatical about rock climbing! I feel largely responsible for getting her to try the sport!!

Amazing Krabi, Thailand.

Posted By : Techhdarre.

Wickedly Beautiful Beaches.

So I was out of my funk thanks to Becky and in the famous beach area of southern Thailand not exactly where the book “The Beach” was set, but close enough. It was in fact where some of the movie was filmed (the Kho San Road scene where incidentally my cousin Traviss and his fiancé Carly had a part!!! How cool is that?)

Traviss and Carly were actually the ones who recommended Krabi to me…I am forever in their debt for learning about such a place and the recommendations they gave me for in and around the area. It was their favorite place in Thailand and now mine! Actually it is my favorite place in the world! Not so much the town itself but the whole area and what it has to offer: the proximity to tropical beaches and remote islands with millions of things to see and do on the cheap! Figure in the excellent food and the friendly Thai people and it all added up to an amazing experience!!!

Krabi with Becky was a blast, enjoyed hanging with her doing the beach and food and shopping thing. Becky eventually travelled on to Ko Phang Na a popular Island on the East coast of Thailand for the full moon party there. The full moon party is basically a huge all night rave attended to by thousands of mostly western partiers…an event that shouldn’t be missed by anyone visiting Thailand. We parted company but by the time we did I had come back into my own and felt able to handle things a little better than when I was in Penang!!!

Limestone Formation.

Beautiful weather, beautiful beaches, great food, awesome people and I was beginning to meet other travellers, life was good. My initial reason for travelling to Krabi was to rock climb so I went to Railay beach to check it out. Railay beach is a stunning place that can only be reached by a long tail boat ride (see pictures for a view of a long tail) It has three or four beach areas with sand that is white and ‘crunchy’ and crystal clear blue water. There are no vehicles here which only adds to its allure. On the ride over I met Kate. A cool Brit from Leeds who was also going to rock climb. We ended up in the same course and hung out thereafter for a few days. The rock climbing course was pretty basic but it was great to hang out with a few people who shared the same interest and to do something that was familiar to me! The introductory half day course cost me 500 Baht which is equivalent to $20.00 CDN!!

Kate and I returned to Krabi that night on a long tail in a middle of a squall the only time I was ever freezing the entire month! Kate’s friend Claire came from Australia the next day and we all hung out a bit and met up with a friend of Kate’s from University. It amazes me the frequency of which people meet friends of theirs from home. Hasn’t happened to me yet! I had spent about five days in Krabi and was itching to go somewhere else. I caught wind of an Island called Ko Lanta which was supposed to be beautiful and largely undeveloped so I decided to head there.

Climbing At Railay Beach.

Coincidentally Kate had booked a spot on the same island with her travelling companion Claire. They headed off and I followed the next day. Unfortunately the places we booked were quite a ways apart, actually not unfortunate as driving to their Villa on a scooter that evening ended up being one of the most memorable moments of the trip so far. So we were able to meet up and hang out a wee bit longer and enjoy more great conversation. Kate and Claire left for Bangkok the next day and again I was on my own.

I’ve been waiting for like 6 months for this trip and let me scream this straight to your face: Unpleasant things happened before i left on the AirAsia plane (like failing to locate where i put my money, a sudden request from a certain boss for a presentation, a troublesome house contractor..). i swear these people are jealous of me leaving for the fun, sun, and sand. Alhamdulillah i managed in the end. *big smile* Now, let’s skip the babbling and more details on the trip. i’m ready to be your tour guide.

The Place
For those of you who is clueless on where in the world is Krabi, it’s in Southern Thailand. Contrary to popular belief, Krabi is not an island. It’s a province by the sea with beautiful islands a few kilometers from the shore. We stayed in Ao Nang area, which is a popular location for tourist. The Ao Nang and Noppharat Thara beaches are beautiful! Endless clear unpolluted beach with rows and rows of various shops and restaurant to keep you at ease. Oh, we stayed at the Sunda Resort. It’s a 3-star resort in Ao Nang. Unfortunately it’s not by the beach. Fortunately they have free tuk-tuk service for the guests to go to Ao Nang and Noppharat Thara area. Even though it’s not a luxury 5-star hotel, WE TOTALLY LOVE IT! i love the private-ness, tranquility, and the friendly staff. The rooms are beautifully decorated, spacious, and really clean!
Foods in Krabi
Like i said, finding food is easy in Ao Nang area as there are rows of restaurants. There are variety of them; Italian, Indian, Mexican and of course, Thai and Asian food. However, it’s quite hard to find Muslim foods in Ao Nang area.We found Muslim foods in Krabi town (which is like 30 minutes taxi drive) and only on the last day we found a Muslim restaurant in Ao Nang (away from the beach- explains why it was undiscovered).

Second Day Foods:
Lunch were provided by the tour agents as we went for an island hopping trip. Again, for dinner we went to Krabi town and found a BBQ-steamboat halal restaurant. With buffet concept, they only charge 190 Baht per pax (around RM19 per pax). The restaurant’s name is Rabeab’s Kitchen Inter-Buffet. We were beond starving that night so we ate like pigs!
Third Day Foods
We didn’t have time for proper lunch as some of us went to the spa, and another two went bungee jumping (guess which session i took? Pampering session at the spa or being crazy and bungee jump?). Obviously we were effing starving when our visiting trip (i’ll tell you later) ended at 6pm. We found a Muslim restaurant in Ao Nang, Sareefah Restaurant. Out of all meals we had in Krabi, this dinner we had at Sareefah’s is the best!! Oh, sorry gambar makanan tak sempat amek sebab kelaparan tahap kanak-kanak Bosnia, tak hengat bergambar bagai.

Activities in Krabi
Now, where do i start? As Krabi is a beachy destination, obviously the main attractions are water activities. Island hopping, fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, and kayaking are the main attractions. However, they don’t really have water sport activities like jet-ski or paragliding.
What we did in Krabi?
1. Island Hopping
2. Horse Riding
3. Bungee jumping
4. Elephant Trekking
5. Visiting Tiger Cave Temple
6. Relaxing at the waterfall and hot spring
But Krabi offers much, MUCH more than that. You can also:
1. Shooting (at a real shooting range)
2. Fishing
3. Rock climbing
4. Camping at Phi Phi Island
5. Water rafting
6. Scuba diving
7. Bird watching
8. Jungle trekking
The list seems endless! i’m gonna elaborate a bit about the activities we had.
Island Hopping
We took the 4-islands Island Hopping Package. It was included in our Go Holiday Air Asia Package. We had so much fun traveling on the speedboat that we forgot to be sea sick :p The islands that we went to are Phi Phi Don , Phi Phi Lay and Bamboo Island (betul ke ni aku pakai tibai je.. haha). We stopped at Maya Bay, Monkey Beach (for open-sea snorkeling), swam at a beach at Phi Phi Don and sight seeing at Loh Samah Bay, Pileh Bay and Viking Cave. The waters are crystal clear. Totally breath taking! And did you know that the film “The Beach” (starring Leonardo DiCaprio) was shot in Maya Bay? Ok i’ll stop babbling and let the pictures do the talking!

Horse Riding

We went to Sathai Horse Stable for a one-hour horse riding session at sunset. It’s a 15 minutes drive from Ao Nang, transportation was provided by the owner of the horse stable. Very accommodating, these people!

Bungee Jumping
This is the highlight of my vacation! When i asked Mr. Chenta “Bb, can i bungee jump?” He said “Ummm.. OK sayang. i know you really wanna do this. But make sure you come home in one piece ok? Don’t come home in a box” i love every moment of it. i love every seconds spent deciding whether to or not to jump. i love the racing heartbeat, wondering will this be my last. i love the feeling of wanting to shout at the instructor, to tell him to “shut up, i’m scared”. i love the feeling of standing at the edge of the crane, terrified when i looked down yet excited to jump. And i won’t forget what i see when i jump – at the blurring-and-moving trees and mountains, the sound that escaped my mouth. Bungee jumping is like suicide+being a yo-yo. You’d thought the terrifying moment is over once u reach the bottom of the jump. Before you know it, you’re soaring up to the sky and fall again, and up to the sky and fall again. The process seems endless! i think this yo-yoing part is the scariest! i really shouted “Stopppp! Stop laaaa!” We didn’t plan on doing bungee jumping in Krabi as we didn’t know they have it. When we arrived at the hotel and saw the pamphlets, we knew we’re gonna do it. No turning back. It costs us 1300 Baht (around RM130 which is super cheap!), and it takes about 10 minutes to tie the rope and things to our legs, 5 minutes of traveling in the crane, 40 seconds to debate whether to jump or not, and 1 minute to jump and yo-yoing. i can now officially tick off one of the items in my “30 Things To Do Before i Turn 30″ list.

Elephant Trekking, Visiting Tiger Cave Temple, and Swimming at the waterfall and hot spring.

These activities are included in a tour organized by Unseen Excursion. It cost us 1100 Baht each and started at 12pm and ended at around 6pm. Elephant trekking is basically riding on an elephant for an hour. To be honest, it’s quite boring to sit on an elephant for an hour and walk thru semak samun. If you’re “lucky” the elephant will make a stop to poop. Euwwww!

After elephant trekking we went to Tiger Cave Temple. It is actually situated atop a mountain and you have to climb up 1237 stairs to see it. No, thank you! So we just saw the temples situated at the ground and in the cave.

To wrap up the trip, we went to a Bang Kram waterfall hot spring for a dip in the hot and cold water! The uniqueness lies in hot water spring yang berada di atas dan mengalir sebagai air terjun yang sejuk di bawah.

Shopping and Spa in Krabi
i didn’t shop much as that was not my intention. But i’m telling you the things are cheap, cheap, CHEAP! Dresses at about 150-300 Baht, maxi dresses at 300-400 Baht, T-shirt for souvenir you can get at 150 Baht. However, you can buy at these low price if you’re a good haggler (like i am! Hehe). Fake designer handbags are also widely sold but i’m not sure about the price because i’m so not interested. CAN YOU BELIEVE THEY HAVE FAKE MARC JACOBS?? i didn’t know.. =p

There are LOADS of spas in Krabi. Luxury spa, non-luxury spa… For every 4-7 shops, there’ll be a spa in Ao Nang area. They come with really CHEAP price tags!! Thai massage ranges from 200-250 Baht per hour, manicure at 200 Baht, pedicure at 250 Baht, hair treatment ranges from 500-1000 Baht, aromatherapy massage at 300 Baht.. These prices is half of what we pay for in KL! So girls (and you metrosexual guys!) don’t even leave Krabi wothout going to the spa! Bottom line is, I LOVE KRABI! i might come back and this time, i’ll make sure i’ll stay longer. 4 days are not enough.

Mention Thailand and images of beaches, elephants and Bangkok come to mind. Less known is the fact Thailand rock climbing is some of the best in the world.

Thailand Rock Climbing
Located in Southeast Asia, Thailand is bordered by Cambodia, Burma and Laos in the north and Malaysia in the south. The shape of the country is somewhat similar to Italy, and you’ll find similar differences between northern and southern Thailand that you do in Italy. For rock climbing enthusiasts, the south of Thailand is where the action is. The rock formations in Thailand are almost universally limestone. The level of climbing can be as simple as bouldering or as challenging as tackling over vertical cliffs. This makes Thailand a popular rock climbing destination since it has a little something for everyone.

Krabi
Located on the southern section of the “tail” of Thailand, Krabi has a wide variety of rock climbing challenges. Most of the climbs in this area are of the pre-bolted sport route variety. There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of climbs with difficulty levels from beginner to multi-pitch knuckle crushers. The beauty of climbing in Krabi is…well, the beauty. While you might have visions of jungles and mosquitoes when thinking of Thailand, Krabi is an area of a different sort. Most of the climbs have been set up on cliff faces on the beach. Being natural capitalists, the Thai’s have built hotels, bars and so on at these locations. As a result, you can literally climb a multi-pitch route for five hours, cool off with a swim and then have a beer. If there is such a thing as a rock climbing heaven, many feel Krabi is it. Before you cash in your savings, keep in mind that Thailand is a seasonal vacation spot. If you go during the wet season, there is a good chance you’ll just end up sitting around drinking beer. While that isn’t too bad, you’ll go crazy looking at the climbs that are so close, but oh so far away. Generally, you want to head to Thailand from late November through maybe April. The summer months tend to be both incredibly hot and wet. Make sure you pull up forecasts for the area before booking a trip. Flying to Thailand is inexpensive, but flights are incredibly long with stopovers. Still, it is all worth it once you experience Thailand rock climbing.

Railay Beach : Surrounded by sheer limestone cliffs on 3 sides, Railay Beach, just South of Ao Nang, can easily be reached by local taxi boat in 15 minutes. The name ‘Railay’ is supposedly an abbreviation for ‘Rai Tale’ in Thai, which means ‘orchard near the sea.’ Railay Beach consists of two bays joined at the headland on the West and East respectively.

West Railay is a narrow beach with towering karst formations and cliffs suitable for rock climbing. The turquoise water and long beach are highly popular amongst holiday makers for sunbathing and swimming. What has brought Railay its fame, however, is rock climbing. Back in 1992, a French rock climber explored the cliffs thoroughly and returned home to reveal his discoveries in rock climbing circles. since then, a great many experienced climbers have followed in his footsteps to enjoy the beauty and mystery of the soaring limestone pinnacles. The routes which they and others in their turn have established, vary in difficulty from 5C to 8C in the French system of standards, which include multi-pitch and single pitch climbs. Railay is said to have very challenging rock climbing by international standards. One of the best known routes is called ‘The King and I’, which is multi-pitch and to be found on the cliff named ‘Thai Wand Wall’. Tonsai Beach has 32 difficult and easy routes, with overhanging rocks that will test the strength of any climber. The ‘Humanity’ route offers more muti-pitch options.

East Railay, (Nam Mao Beach), is the most popular of all for rock climbing, especially ‘Pa 1-2-3′, because of its easy access to accommodation. The 22 routes here, assessed at 5-7C in difficulty, suit the needs of both individual rock climbers and rock climbing schools.

HOW TO GET TO RAILAY BEACH
Although it is one of Krabi’s mainland beaches, it is inaccessible by road, being surrounded on all sides by cliffs. There are local taxi-boat services from Chao Fa pier in Krabi town (40 minutes), from Ao Nang (15 minutes) or from Nam Mao Beach (10 minutes).

WHERE TO STAY ON RAILAY BEACH
There are many rooms available in hotels and resorts in Railay, ranging in price and comfort. Pre-booking is nearly always advised, and during peak periods (including Thai holidays), reservations are a must. Railay Bay Resort & Spa is in West Railay and faces the sea.

WHERE TO EAT ON RAILAY BEACH
Most restaurants on Railay these days meet international culinary standards, and the seafood dishes here always receive the most orders.

FACILITIES ON RAILAY BEACH
Railay Beach has more or less the same standard and range of facilities as its neighbouring beaches, with the main additional activity being rock climbing.
