Yeah, it has been THAT long since I’ve posted the subsequent chapter on our Krabi-Phuket Getaway earlier this year. Blame it on procrastination, blame it on the lazy bones …. but here’s another short post, but on one most memorable stall on the sidewalk in Krabi, where we had our breakfasts TWICE during our stay directly opposite of the stall, at Ao Nang Grand Inn.

No menu, no price list. Just stand there and point away.

Being a Thai Muslim in Krabi (and they’re in abundance, I tell you), Koh Det (spelling might be wrong) operates his stall early in the mornings right in front of Bangkok Bank on the main road of Ao Nang, on the same row with McDonald’s. You can’t miss this row of roadside stalls, for they operate almost round the clock, interchangeably between breakfast-brunch stalls and lunch-dinner stalls occupying the same lots.

The yellow-hued grains with chicken is called Khao Mok Gai,
a type of Thai-Malay dish not unlike our very own Nasi Biryani.

Routinely getting used to having breakfasts at 7-11 convenience stores whenever we were in Thailand, this time around I was glad we somewhat broke the mould. Somewhat, in the sense that we STILL got our early morning milk-fixes at 7-11, and snacking between meals, as well as filling up on the not-to-be-missed Lay’s Potato Chips.

To cut a long story short, throughout the few days we stayed there in Ao Nang of Krabi, we have taken a liking to Koh Det’s offerings, and his cheery demeanour. Unpretentious, conversing in Malay language (our forte, of course) and sharing of stories (from bus to flight fares, and name of the dishes), he was an affable chap alright. Almost felt at home, as though we were eating at some random mamak stall here in Malaysia.

The Khao Mok Gai (or Thai Yellow Rice with Chicken) reminded me of Nasi Biryani the most, from the oblong, yellow-tinged grains of rice to the cuts of marinated chicken cooked within. A potful of Khao Mok Gai greets the customers every morning at Koh Det’s, to be served with some cut chillies and dark soy sauce, if you feel the urge to do so.

Catch the whiff of the Khao Mok Gai, the fried rice with prawns (Khao Pad),
start your day with some soft-boiled eggs, and do not peek at the wok-ful of DARK elixir …..

Not as fragrant as Nasi Biryani, and somewhat bland, the plateful of rice certainly needed the extra chopped bird’s eye chillies to perk things up. Of course, you can opt for his Khao Pad (fried rice) with prawns as alternatives, or ask for an extra order of fried chicken, fresh from the wok.

Another one of his specialty, and one of southern Thailand’s most famous breakfast of choice is the Khanom Jeen, comprising of rice vermicelli noodles served with fish curry sauce (or in some instances, chicken or pork ribs curry) and slices of cucumber, and raw greens on the side. At only 29 baht / RM2 / USD0.60 per serving, you bet you can down packets of these in a flash. The thin, long strands of noodles resemble spaghetti, and the yellow curry was not spicy at all, but instead very rich, bursting with flavours from the spices and coconut milk.

Khao Niao Gai – Sticky rice with Poached Chicken

But personally, I liked the Khao Niao Gai the most. Sticky glutinous rice served with shreds of poached chicken meat, topped with a dark sauce akin to our ‘taucu’ sauce (preserved soybean paste), and cuts of cili padi. The bland looking plate of rice with chicken may look boring, but trust me, this is something you should try at least once in Krabi/Phuket. Of course, you can also find this in northern Thailand, for glutinous rice can be served with virtually anything in Thailand. But only in southern Thailand can you find this version which is also HALAL, meaning this should be a hit with the Muslim tourists.

And some sweets to end the session …..

Aside from the assorted range of savouries for breakfast-brunch, Koh Det also serves a variety of sweet snacks (kuih-muih) to cater to the lighter eaters. The sticky rice with ‘kaya’ (coconut & egg jam) was especially memorable, for the almost beige-coloured kaya was richer than our variety here, but tasted smooth and complemented the sweet-ish glutinous rice perfectly. Different from Keng Nam’s version for sure, and not as sweet. The ones wrapped in banana leaves resembled ‘kuih koci’, with a slightly salty taste, and the glutinous rice with shredded sweetened coconut was passable as well. So if you’re ever in Krabi, and staying around Ao Nang, do look out for this stall, and its neighbouring ‘wonders’, serving from burgers to sandwiches, and pancakes to fresh fruit juices.

This chapter is all about the Krabi night market in Krabi town, situated about 30 minutes away from Ao Nang beach. To get from Ao Nang area to Krabi town, we took the ‘bus’ (more like a songthaew, or mini truck/tuk-tuk) for 50 baht / RM 5 / USD 1.40 per person. The bus plies the route all around Ao Nang; the main roads, at least. So you can board the bus almost anywhere if you’re walking parallel to the shores of Ao Nang beach. Take note that after 6pm (Thailand time), the rate increases to 60 baht / RM6 / USD1.70 per person automatically.

When the tide is low, you can literally walk on waters …..

The ride was smooth, albeit the journey rather long on the bumpy mini-truck that we were sitting on. But the cooling breeze was all too welcoming, caressing our faces at the speed the bus was zipping past the other vehicles. And at that moment, I knew that This …. Is My Vacation.

Scary looking ogre atop the pillar, ever-ready to throw the traffic lights at ya …….

The Krabi Night Market – Only on weekends, it seems.

A stall selling deep fried pineapple or banana dumplings, with an array of toppings

The sweets and the savouries, you’ll be spoilt for choice if you’re one who adores Street Fares.

A type of snack that is catching on fast with the Muslim communities even here in Malaysia
- Fried bread sticks with coconut/egg jam (kaya).

Crispy fried chicken salad – spicy, crunchy and appetizing. Kinda took away the guilt.

Wallop all those quail eggs, and watch your cholesterol shoots up the roof ! Btw, we did not. Really.

Fried Ice Cream, even in Thailand ? But with a little twist – The outer layer’s made from bread.

Khao Yam – A most famous southern Thailand (you can also find this in Hat Yai) breakfast made up
of rice mixed with assorted raw vegetables, meat floss and peanuts. Nasi Kerabu or Nasi Ulam
would nicely summed up the experience.

Yup, the Early Bird does get all the Worms. But since the Night Market in Krabi town opens
from evening onwards … can you blame them?

A few hours were sure to be not enough. But we could only managed as much, for the remaining of our days were spent either on the islands surrounding the peninsular (island-hopping, snorkelling, etc), or recuperating at Ao Nang – soaking in the sun, the moon, and of course, the ever-economic option of Thai massage at a fraction of the rate being charged here in Malaysia.

I’ve been waiting for like 6 months for this trip and let me scream this straight to your face: Unpleasant things happened before i left on the AirAsia plane (like failing to locate where i put my money, a sudden request from a certain boss for a presentation, a troublesome house contractor..). i swear these people are jealous of me leaving for the fun, sun, and sand. Alhamdulillah i managed in the end. *big smile* Now, let’s skip the babbling and more details on the trip. i’m ready to be your tour guide.

The Place
For those of you who is clueless on where in the world is Krabi, it’s in Southern Thailand. Contrary to popular belief, Krabi is not an island. It’s a province by the sea with beautiful islands a few kilometers from the shore. We stayed in Ao Nang area, which is a popular location for tourist. The Ao Nang and Noppharat Thara beaches are beautiful! Endless clear unpolluted beach with rows and rows of various shops and restaurant to keep you at ease. Oh, we stayed at the Sunda Resort. It’s a 3-star resort in Ao Nang. Unfortunately it’s not by the beach. Fortunately they have free tuk-tuk service for the guests to go to Ao Nang and Noppharat Thara area. Even though it’s not a luxury 5-star hotel, WE TOTALLY LOVE IT! i love the private-ness, tranquility, and the friendly staff. The rooms are beautifully decorated, spacious, and really clean!
Foods in Krabi
Like i said, finding food is easy in Ao Nang area as there are rows of restaurants. There are variety of them; Italian, Indian, Mexican and of course, Thai and Asian food. However, it’s quite hard to find Muslim foods in Ao Nang area.We found Muslim foods in Krabi town (which is like 30 minutes taxi drive) and only on the last day we found a Muslim restaurant in Ao Nang (away from the beach- explains why it was undiscovered).

Second Day Foods:
Lunch were provided by the tour agents as we went for an island hopping trip. Again, for dinner we went to Krabi town and found a BBQ-steamboat halal restaurant. With buffet concept, they only charge 190 Baht per pax (around RM19 per pax). The restaurant’s name is Rabeab’s Kitchen Inter-Buffet. We were beond starving that night so we ate like pigs!
Third Day Foods
We didn’t have time for proper lunch as some of us went to the spa, and another two went bungee jumping (guess which session i took? Pampering session at the spa or being crazy and bungee jump?). Obviously we were effing starving when our visiting trip (i’ll tell you later) ended at 6pm. We found a Muslim restaurant in Ao Nang, Sareefah Restaurant. Out of all meals we had in Krabi, this dinner we had at Sareefah’s is the best!! Oh, sorry gambar makanan tak sempat amek sebab kelaparan tahap kanak-kanak Bosnia, tak hengat bergambar bagai.

Activities in Krabi
Now, where do i start? As Krabi is a beachy destination, obviously the main attractions are water activities. Island hopping, fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, and kayaking are the main attractions. However, they don’t really have water sport activities like jet-ski or paragliding.
What we did in Krabi?
1. Island Hopping
2. Horse Riding
3. Bungee jumping
4. Elephant Trekking
5. Visiting Tiger Cave Temple
6. Relaxing at the waterfall and hot spring
But Krabi offers much, MUCH more than that. You can also:
1. Shooting (at a real shooting range)
2. Fishing
3. Rock climbing
4. Camping at Phi Phi Island
5. Water rafting
6. Scuba diving
7. Bird watching
8. Jungle trekking
The list seems endless! i’m gonna elaborate a bit about the activities we had.
Island Hopping
We took the 4-islands Island Hopping Package. It was included in our Go Holiday Air Asia Package. We had so much fun traveling on the speedboat that we forgot to be sea sick :p The islands that we went to are Phi Phi Don , Phi Phi Lay and Bamboo Island (betul ke ni aku pakai tibai je.. haha). We stopped at Maya Bay, Monkey Beach (for open-sea snorkeling), swam at a beach at Phi Phi Don and sight seeing at Loh Samah Bay, Pileh Bay and Viking Cave. The waters are crystal clear. Totally breath taking! And did you know that the film “The Beach” (starring Leonardo DiCaprio) was shot in Maya Bay? Ok i’ll stop babbling and let the pictures do the talking!

Horse Riding

We went to Sathai Horse Stable for a one-hour horse riding session at sunset. It’s a 15 minutes drive from Ao Nang, transportation was provided by the owner of the horse stable. Very accommodating, these people!

Bungee Jumping
This is the highlight of my vacation! When i asked Mr. Chenta “Bb, can i bungee jump?” He said “Ummm.. OK sayang. i know you really wanna do this. But make sure you come home in one piece ok? Don’t come home in a box” i love every moment of it. i love every seconds spent deciding whether to or not to jump. i love the racing heartbeat, wondering will this be my last. i love the feeling of wanting to shout at the instructor, to tell him to “shut up, i’m scared”. i love the feeling of standing at the edge of the crane, terrified when i looked down yet excited to jump. And i won’t forget what i see when i jump – at the blurring-and-moving trees and mountains, the sound that escaped my mouth. Bungee jumping is like suicide+being a yo-yo. You’d thought the terrifying moment is over once u reach the bottom of the jump. Before you know it, you’re soaring up to the sky and fall again, and up to the sky and fall again. The process seems endless! i think this yo-yoing part is the scariest! i really shouted “Stopppp! Stop laaaa!” We didn’t plan on doing bungee jumping in Krabi as we didn’t know they have it. When we arrived at the hotel and saw the pamphlets, we knew we’re gonna do it. No turning back. It costs us 1300 Baht (around RM130 which is super cheap!), and it takes about 10 minutes to tie the rope and things to our legs, 5 minutes of traveling in the crane, 40 seconds to debate whether to jump or not, and 1 minute to jump and yo-yoing. i can now officially tick off one of the items in my “30 Things To Do Before i Turn 30″ list.

Elephant Trekking, Visiting Tiger Cave Temple, and Swimming at the waterfall and hot spring.

These activities are included in a tour organized by Unseen Excursion. It cost us 1100 Baht each and started at 12pm and ended at around 6pm. Elephant trekking is basically riding on an elephant for an hour. To be honest, it’s quite boring to sit on an elephant for an hour and walk thru semak samun. If you’re “lucky” the elephant will make a stop to poop. Euwwww!

After elephant trekking we went to Tiger Cave Temple. It is actually situated atop a mountain and you have to climb up 1237 stairs to see it. No, thank you! So we just saw the temples situated at the ground and in the cave.

To wrap up the trip, we went to a Bang Kram waterfall hot spring for a dip in the hot and cold water! The uniqueness lies in hot water spring yang berada di atas dan mengalir sebagai air terjun yang sejuk di bawah.

Shopping and Spa in Krabi
i didn’t shop much as that was not my intention. But i’m telling you the things are cheap, cheap, CHEAP! Dresses at about 150-300 Baht, maxi dresses at 300-400 Baht, T-shirt for souvenir you can get at 150 Baht. However, you can buy at these low price if you’re a good haggler (like i am! Hehe). Fake designer handbags are also widely sold but i’m not sure about the price because i’m so not interested. CAN YOU BELIEVE THEY HAVE FAKE MARC JACOBS?? i didn’t know.. =p

There are LOADS of spas in Krabi. Luxury spa, non-luxury spa… For every 4-7 shops, there’ll be a spa in Ao Nang area. They come with really CHEAP price tags!! Thai massage ranges from 200-250 Baht per hour, manicure at 200 Baht, pedicure at 250 Baht, hair treatment ranges from 500-1000 Baht, aromatherapy massage at 300 Baht.. These prices is half of what we pay for in KL! So girls (and you metrosexual guys!) don’t even leave Krabi wothout going to the spa! Bottom line is, I LOVE KRABI! i might come back and this time, i’ll make sure i’ll stay longer. 4 days are not enough.

HEAVEN BOUND

In the heat of the midday sun, Anna Slukushicina, 30, a rock climber from St Petersburg, attempts an overhang 10 metres above Krabi’s Tonsai Bay. The prominent feature of an overhang, or layback, as climbers call it, is to oppose hand-holds with foot-holds and it’s a strenuous technique used by climbers to overcome some of the toughest spots. The crowd on the ground collectively holds their breath, clapping loudly when she finally completes the tough route. Slukushicina is one of 150 climbers participating in Krabi’s annual Rock and Fire Festival and she and her team partner take top prize, beating competitors from 14 countries in the Lead Marathon climbing contest by completing 47 out of a total 50 routes all over the Railay peninsula. Slukushicina, a rock climbing coach back home with 10 years experience to her credit, has travelled to many famous sites around the world, scaling rock faces in Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, Italy and of course, in Russia. She’s spent the last four months in Krabi and says she really appreciates the towering limestone cliffs. “This is one of the best destinations for rock climbing. Nowhere else in the world can climbers stay by the sea close to these beautiful cliffs and climb anytime they feel it,” she says.

As a professional climber, Slukushicina, enjoys the hazards and complexities of Krabi’s cliffs, “Each rock gives me the skills and knowledge to explore others. I’ve had the time of my life in Railay,” she says. The rock climbing competition, held from April 16 to 18 as part of the Krabi Rock and Fire Festival 2010, was a great success. Apart from the Lead Climbing Marathon, rock climbers can tested their endurance in the Speed Climbing as well as Deep Water Soloing categories at Ao Nang tower, a popular site between Railay West and Tonsai Bay. Rock climbing, says Slukushicina, is an independent sport using only hands, feet and a safety rope. Railay and its environs offer the perfect terrain, with more than 700 bolted sport climbing routes ranging from beginner 5a’s right up to the extremes of 8c under the French grading system. A plethora of climbing schools run by Thais have sprung up in Railay East and Tonsai Bay, with local experts quick to separate extreme athletes from novices and set up climbing routes appropriate for each group. At the far end of Railay east, the beautiful cliff known as 123 is the gathering point for many climbers. Enthusiasts can choose from more than 10 routes and all beginners are advised to start here to get their strength up before going elsewhere. Several hundred climbing routes have developed since the late 1980s, when Krabi first started seeing people scaling its limestone mountains. Routes include high quality limestone, steep, pocketed walls, overhangs and hanging stalactites. Access is usually from the beach and some routes can only be accessed by boat from below. Bouldering, short climbs over a crash pad, is another popular sport, and a good way to practise technical rock climbing skills, though care should be taken when hopping from stone to stone. Deep Water Soloing is also another rock climbing category that has just started to gain popularity in Railay. It’s a form of solo rock climbing that relies purely upon the water at the base of a climb to protect against injury. Ao Nang Tower, is popular for Deep Water Soloing with more than 10 routes for which climbers can choose With limited bolts, it’s a challenging climb but watching the competitors scale the rock is great fun. The tide starts to come in as we watch the fire dancing competition on the beach of Railay West on the last night of the festival. The winner is Tanarat Vejpitak, 14, from Railay, who tells me he’s been performing with fire since he was just three and a half. He’s thrilled to be taking home the prize money. Slukushicina is almost unrecognisable in a stunning evening dress clutching the trophy given to her by Tourist Authority of Thailand governor, Surapol Svetserani. It rains later in the evening but the shower quickly blows over, leaving us with fresh sea breeze under the cloudless sky. The reggae music that’s unique to Railay beach picks up again and the rock climbers, fire dancers and their audience are all happy, proud too to be part of this small festival that’s all their own.

Environment Awareness

If it is environment awareness and adventure that attracts you in scuba diving, than look no further than Krabi and its surrounding off shore islands. You will be fascinated by the beauty of the underwater neptune world and the attractive topographical features above the water.

A great way to spend family time, doing something fun and adventurous is going on a scuba diving holiday in Krabi. With good planning, this can be an adventure of a lifetime. Scuba diving in Krabi is a place that fits your skill level, budget, time and preferences. Normally, these sites are surrounded by breathtaking scenic views and you would not want to miss out on them since you are there anyway. To achieve a good balance, you can ask our guides for recommendations of good diving sites for your trip, combining with land based adventures. Obviously, you want your scuba diving holiday to be something special, a time to remember. Once a person experiences the wonders under the ocean in Krabi, there is no turning back.

You can discover many corals sites around Koh Ha and Koh Ha Yai, with large schools of colourful fish, such as red coral groupers, black spotted porcupine pufferfish, scorpionfish, lobsters, motleys, turtles and large fans. Leopard sharks can also be seen, along with many more. Whereas Koh Si, on the southern end of the island has good visibility. There are staghorn and brain corals. Schools of snapper and large grouper are common in this area, as well as the chance to see seahorses. This is also a good spot for the shy black-tip reef shark. Beautiful coral reefs lie 20m offshore at the small limestone island of Koh Poda. This island is also a popular choice for snorkeling. Another excellent scuba diving site is Hin Daeng (Red Rock), located south of Ao Nang which is part of the Lanta National Marine Park, where you can enjoy a magnificent number of large formations and stunning reefs. Here, soft corals in various shades of red and sea fans decorate the vertical wall, accommodating the presence of whale sharks and manta rays. Structurally Hin Daeng pinnacle protrudes 3m above the surface and drops 70m vertically below. This site is suitable for advanced divers. Hin Muang (Purple Rock), situated a few hundred metres from Hin Daeng, is covered with a colour-rich range of pink to purple soft corals, hence the name. This is Thailand’s highest vertical wall at 200m long and 20m wide. It is a home to anemones and colourful sea fans. There are little caves and ledges for the sea creatures to inhabit, including micro life. Manta rays, sharks and leopard sharks are seen around here. This site is also ideal for more experienced divers. The Phi Phi Islands immensely popular site with an unforgettable land and seascape is a gem of the Andaman Sea. It comprised of Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. There are a number of dive sites to discover both for snorkeling and scuba diving. The best season to dive here is from February to May. Limestone cliffs that plunge down beneath the surface are the abode of lively soft coral, with a profusion of marine life, such as black and white banded sea snakes, turtles and nudibranches. Anemone Reef located 18km west of the Phi Phi Islands with 7m deep reef hosts a variety of clownfish, anemone crabs and clear cleaner shrimps. Large schools of fish are seen everywhere on this reef, including snapper, grouper, fusilier. Black-tip reef shark and leopard shark are frequently seen here.

Been here and what blogger discovered & experienced :-

The Krabi province is also well known for its extraordinary underwater landscape. We couldn’t miss this chance to go diving, even if we did not dive for 2 and 5 years respectively. That’s why decided to take a refresher course. We found that the extra-money was worth it and we were really much more confident after the refresher, which consisted in a few exercises under water before starting the real dive and some theoretical things on the boat. The incredible landscape and marine life underwater definitely revived our passion for diving! Well, for Annamaria, who had passed her certification in freezing Canadian water, it was the discovery of the pleasure to dive in clear and warm water! We liked it so much that we made 6 dives in total! We even had an unwanted adrenaline rush while visiting a very dark cave full with lobsters! Unfortunately, we do not have pictures from these dives, but just imagine tons of colourful fish and incredible marine animals swimming or laying in, on and around many kinds of different soft and hard coral. Among others we saw: razorfish, nudibranch, many different shrimps and crabs, seahorses (they are so cute… around 2cm big only!), colourful angelfish, scorpionfish (poisonous!), beautiful lionfish, giant grouper, a leopardshark (very impressive!), a baby nurseshark, a blue-spotted sting ray, a big hawcksburry sea-turtle, sea-snakes (also poisonous), flutefish, trumpetfish, sweetlips, porcupine pufferfish, tuna, barracudas and many, many others…!

MEMORABLE AFFECTIONS

Elephant is seen as a symbol of the nation and a talisman for the Thai people. With their wrinkly gray skin and swaying trunk, they are a fascinating combination of brute force, gentleness and remarkable agility that inspires both respect and affection. Elephant calves begin their training when they are about four years old. They quickly learn and obey the words of command. They get to know their driver (mahout), and get used to being mounted and dismounted.
With elephants fast disappearing from the wild in Thailand, the best place to see these fascinating animals up close is in a trekking camp. There are only a few camps in Krabi, such establishments must follow strict guidelines as set by the National Livestock Department regarding the provision of adequate food, water and shade for their animals, as well as proper health care. A trek will allow you to experience this first-hand, as well as the animals’ natural forest environment. Carrying tourists for fun means the elephants are able to earn their keep, while living as freely as is possible : as there is not enough space to release them into the wild, and they are very costly to feed (eating up to 300 kg of food per day) if not the only alternatives for these gentle giants are begging, illegal logging, or inactivity in a zoo.

” The finale of the day was elephant trekking which was very enlightening. The elephants are trained starting at the age of 8. It is a very controversial practice as there is much concern as to how the elephants are treated. Our elephants appeared to be treated well by their trainers and were never hit but rather expected to respond to commands. However they did have the elephants chained by the ankle to a tree in between rides (we didn’t actually witness that but you could see the tree and the chains). At night they presumably take the elephants into the hills and allow them more freedom although they are still captive but have a wider area in which to roam. The ride was slow and clunky ( I don’t know how else to describe it). Kristin and I had a novice and he was slightly misbehaved!! He veered off the path to eat and headed towards the water – we thought at that point that the three of us were going for a swim!! Fortunately he only bent down to take a drink and didn’t spray us!! He definitely made our adventure interesting! We had mixed feelings after riding the elephants as it was an experience to ride such a large animal but it left you a little disheartened that their captivity became their existence. ”
